Hatboro-Horsham HS Robotics Intramural Challenge
For the 2021 season, Hatters Robotics decided to try something a little different. With the typical FIRST season out the window due to COVID-19, we want to provide our students with a safe alternative that would give as close to an experience that our students deserve without compromising on social distancing and health guidelines. This resulted in Tumbleweed Takeover!
Our full team is broken into 6 teams to build individual robots to compete in the challenge. Creating our own challenge allows us to be extremely flexible with our season and follow social distancing protocols set forward by both the school district and supplemented by the team.

We wanted the budget to be a major component of the competition. Usually, we do not put a huge emphasis on watching the budget because we want to do cool things but that’s not realistic this year building 6 robots. No way each team can build a $5000+ robot, nor should we need to. We are structuring the challenge in a way that there are opportunities to receive bonus money added to our budget if we meet certain challenges, milestones, and judged awards. We want the challenge to evolve based on our success through the year and into the fall!
A considerable amount of work has gone into planning a safe and fun atmosphere in which we can host an internal robotics competition and we look forward to the new learning opportunities that Tumbleweed Takeover has in store for our team alongside the FIRST @ Home Challenges.

Challenge summaryTraveling through the wild west, a group of ranchers are working to save a tumbleweed overrun town and find a sand dune to eradicate the tumbleweed.
Robots collect foam footballs (called tumbleweeds) and transport them up a flight of stairs (called the sand dune) to score points based on the elevation of each tumbleweed and robot at the end of the match. Additional tumbleweed are released by shooting through a target known as the lasso. |
